About The Chef Owners

Herbert and Eleanor Peters founded the Thomaston Cafe in 1990. Herbert Peters, a native of Germany, is a Certified Culinary Educator (C.C.E.) and was a Culinary Arts Instructor for 20 years. In addition to his teaching career, he has 45 years experience working as a chef in New York City and Maine. Several years ago he was named "Chef of the Year" by his colleagues of the American Culinary Federation, Maine Chapter. Herbert also worked for several years as a restaurant reviewer for the Bangor Daily News.

Eleanor has a variety of experiences as a baker, bank teller, counselor and full time mother of four children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. All of the children and grandchildren have at one time participated in running the cafe. Mom takes care of the finances, advertising, management and the many other tasks associated with owning a family business.

The Thomaston Cafe won first place in the "Maine Menus Month Award 2002" statewide for promoting and enhancing Maine products. It has been featured in The Dining Section of the New York Times (July 10, 2002) praised for it's hybrid character: traditional, innovative and eclectic. "Clearly a chef, no mere cook is at work here." Two recipes from Gourmet Magazine's "As You Like It" column – Haddock Cakes and Chilled Raspberry Soup. In April 1998, Downeast Magazine singled out the Thomaston Cafe's fish chowder as an exceptional Maine dish and praised our many creative menu items.

The Peters welcome you to the Thomaston Cafe for breakfast, lunch, dinner or Sunday brunch. Come in, relax and have a good meal with friends and family.
